Geriatric care managers help adult children make decisions regarding aging parents
2009-12-16

Many adult children are turning to geriatric care managers to help care for elderly parents, MarketWatch reports.

The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, a trade group, has grown rapidly due to the increased demand from baby boomers who need help as their parents age. Group enrollment was just 50 when it was founded in 1985, said board member Joyce Gray to MarketWatch, but now stands at 2,000.

Baby boomers often live far from their elderly parents and are unable to provide daily care. Some boomers are used to paying for services and see no reason not to do so with elder care management, MarketWatch says. Whatever the reason, geriatric care managers stand at the ready to help with senior care issues.

A geriatric care manager's duties can range from filling out Medicaid paperwork - a daunting process - to accompanying seniors to doctor's office visits. Care managers can offer valuable advice to seniors' family members, too, on topics like home health aides and seniors' ability to live on their own.

And they can even serve as a mediator between family members divided on the issue of caring for an elderly parent.
