More retirees working during retirement
2010-05-25

The economic crisis jeopardized or wiped out the retirement savings on many older Americans, leaving them fearful that their income will not outlast their golden years. To ease these fears and bring in extra income, more seniors are finding part-time jobs, a new study shows.

Reports show that 6.4 percent of seniors age 75 or older were still employed in 2006, MSNBC said. The statistic is an increase from 4.7 percent of seniors that were still working 10 years earlier, the news website said. This trend may be due to American's fears of running out of income or simply boredom during retirement.

Many retirees who go back to work choose to work part-time. Temp agencies are popular for hiring all ages and most pay between $10-$30 per hour, MSNBC reports. Retirees who are passionate about history often end up working at museums and monuments, which both pay well and allow seniors to contribute their own knowledge, the news website recommends.

Regardless of the reason for re-joining the workforce, there are many jobs open to older Americans who are not quite ready to go into full retirement. Older Americans should contact local employment offices, newspaper ads, and friends or family to express their interest in job opportunities. ADNFCR-2917-ID-19799984-ADNFCR
