Moving in retirement still popular, Del Webb says
2010-04-13

Relocating later in life is still popular among older people, a recent survey found - selling a home is harder than it used to be.

According to retirement-community developer Del Webb, a third of older baby boomers - those turning 64 in 2010 - said they planned to move in retirement. Relocating was even more popular among the boomers turning 50 this year; 42 percent of that group expects to move when they retire.

A majority of both boomer groups cited cost of living and access to quality healthcare as reasons to move. Eighty-one percent of the older contingent and 66 percent of the younger one said those things were important.

For those reasons, perhaps, the Carolinas were the most popular retirement destinations. Florida and Arizona placed high on the list, too.

Those retiring soon may have a harder time moving than people willing to wait. The housing market is on the road to recovery, but home sales are still relatively depressed - meaning that selling a home could be a challenge. Still, prices have been on the decline for eight consecutive months, according to real estate data firm Altos Research - and now could be an excellent time to buy.
